Seek Medical Advice Before Pregnancy – Madam Aisah Bawah
A Neonatal Nurse Specialist at Manhyia Hospital, Madam Aisah Bawah, has advised women to seek medical advice before getting pregnant.
She made this statement during an interview with Mrs. Kete Appiah Boateng on Apomuden Ahotoso, aired on OTEC FM 102.9, when the discussion focused on the rising number of premature births.
According to Madam Bawah, many Ghanaian women lack proper knowledge about their menstrual cycles, which often leads to unintended pregnancies. She emphasized that pregnancy should not be an accident but a well-planned decision.
She explained that some women may have underlying health issues that could affect their pregnancies — especially those who are overweight, underweight, or have poor dietary habits. She noted that such conditions could pose risks to both the mother and the unborn child.
Madam Bawah therefore urged women to visit health facilities before conceiving, so that doctors and nurses can conduct necessary laboratory tests and provide essential supplements such as folic acid, which helps prepare the body for pregnancy and supports the baby’s development.
She concluded by stressing the importance of planning pregnancies to ensure the safety and well-being of both mother and child.
