Sensitisation Workshop for Secondary and Tertiary Students

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with ECOWAS, has organised a sensitisation workshop on ECOWAS protocols for secondary and tertiary students.

The workshop was held at the PENSA Hall at KNUST on Wednesday, 15 April 2026, under the theme “Stronger Together for a Brighter Future.”

The Director of the Regional Integration Bureau, Mr Felix Akom Nyarko, emphasised why the workshop was organised, stating that they want the youth, especially students, to understand that the ECOWAS Union is there to help them build their future and to make them aware of the protocols available to them.

According to Mr Felix Akom Nyarko, some of the ECOWAS protocols include the free movement of goods, people, and services. He explained that if a person is from one of the ECOWAS member states and wishes to travel to another ECOWAS country, they do not need a visa. All that is required is a passport or any valid document that proves they are from an ECOWAS member state, so that they will not face any challenges at the border when entering another member country.

He also stated that some of the protocols allow members the freedom to trade in any member state without difficulty, as well as the right to reside in any member state for up to 90 days without harassment over documentation.

He added that ECOWAS protocols are intended to help the youth in member states access job opportunities in other countries within the sub-region. He therefore urged the youth to prepare themselves for such opportunities, adding that even if they have a business in their own country, they can expand it to another ECOWAS country.

The Ashanti Regional Education Director, Dr Williams Kwame Amankra Appiah, also urged students to live together as one people, particularly as members of the ECOWAS community, and to work together to promote peace and unity among themselves and within their countries.

The Deputy Director at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, Madam Dorcas Baidoo, also added that the purpose of the workshop was to help students understand the relationship among member states and to know that they can pursue their education in any ECOWAS country.

The workshop was successful, with the students showing great enthusiasm throughout the programme.
